History

The Electrotechnical Laboratory (ETL) celebrated the 100th anniversary in 1991. It was originally founded as an electrical testing laboratory responsible for conducting test and research on electricity and electrical communications under the Bureau of Electrocommunications, the Ministry of Communications in 1891. Since then, ETL has undergone several organizational changes, as shown in the diagram below, expanding gradually the scope of activities.

In 1909, ETL started to conduct test and research on the fundamentals of electric power technology as well as taking the task of establishing and maintaining the national standards for basic quantities of electricity.

After the separation of the Electronic Communications Division in 1948, ETL newly established within its organization the Physics Division in 1952 and the Electronics Division in 1954 to strengthen the research capability on electronics including its fundamentals.

ETL succeeded in developing the world's first transistorized electronic computer with stored program in 1956, and established the basis of potential capability to cope with the emerging information technology.

In 1970, the Laboratory was restructured with focus of research activities placed on the field of electronics. In 1979, three ETL laboratories located around Tokyo were integrated and moved to Tsukuba Science City. In order to keep up with the ever-changing technological trends, ETL underwent an organizational reform once again in 1988, putting stress on basic research this time. Through the celebration for its centennial anniversary in 1991, it has been making continued efforts to contribute to science and technology of the world.

Currently, ETL is actively pursuing research and development aiming at inspiring breakthroughs, by taking advantage of knowledge, expertise and human resources accumulated in its century's history.

Restructure

There was a change in Japanese name of ETL from "Denki-Shikenjo"(=Electrical Testing Laboratory) to "Denshi-Gijutsu Sogo Kenkyujo"(=Conprehensive Research Intitute), while the English one, Elecrto-technical Laboratory has remained unchanged.
