About Us Superconducting Materials Group was part of the Materials Science Division within the former Electrotechnical Laboratory - ETL, founded in 1891. Recently, after the last organizational changes (starting with April 1st, 2001) our laboratory is now part of Nanoelectronics Research Institute situated in AIST park (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology) which is located in Tsukuba Science City, approximately 60Km to the N-E from Tokyo. The access to the Institute is both by train or bus from Tokyo Station (Central bus and train station in Tokyo) or from Narita Airport. For more details please see the map or click here. Founded in 1998 by Dr. Hideo Ihara, the team is composed by a core of permanent staff and by long-term foreign visiting researchers working under several research programs (CREST1 and STA2 Fellowship programs). Our team has also a number of young MS- or PhD- students affiliated to different Japanese Universities. The main objective of the laboratory is to discover, improve, characterize, produce and apply new high performance superconducting materials in order to be used in the future for different large-scale applications (see our Mission) . _____________ 1 Core Research for Evolutional Science and Technology (CREST) 2 Science and Technology Agency (STA)
